Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Kraunanidhi, who was on an indefinite fast over the Tamil issue in Sri Lanka, ended his fast.
 
Karunanidhi said he was calling off the fast after Sri Lanka has announced that the war in Tamil areas of the Island has ended.

Earlier, he rejected Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's request to call off the fast, who called him and appealed to end the fast.

Karunanidhi's health was continuously monitored by his doctor. Thousands of DMK workers gathered in Chennai where the party supremo was fasting.  

Union Minister G K Vasan, who was at the fast site, told reporters that the Prime Minister spoke to the DMK chief over phone.

"The UPA is pressing for a ceasefire in Sri Lanka. We are trying our best," Vasan said without elaborating.

Karunanidhi suddenly went on a fast on Monday morning, stating that it was his sacrifice on behalf of all Tamils.

"This is my sacrifice for the Lankan Tamil cause. Let me be among the Tamil's sacrifice for the Tamil cause," said Karunanidhi.

Politicians across the south on Sunday echoed his words; some even demanded a separate Eelam for the Lankan Tamils.

Azhagiri, Karunanidhi's son was also on fast in Madurai for Tamil cause. (With PTI inputs)
