Pvt airlines asked to refund cancelled tickets in 48 hrs
Press Trust of India, Saturday August 1, 2009, New Delhi

In a major development, the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has asked private airlines to refund cancelled tickets within 48 hours.

Earlier, ruling out any bailout, the Centre had asked private airlines to withdraw their call for suspending flights on August 18 and warned them of "appropriate action" if flight schedules are disrupted.

"The government reiterates its advice to private airlines against suspending operations on August 18," Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said in a statement.

Maintaining that state taxes on aviation turbine fuel had been an issue even before several present carriers came into existence, Patel said that the government cannot be expected to extend financial help to loss-making private carriers.

Patel, who has renewed his appeal to the private carriers for negotiations, also said the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) could "take appropriate action" under its regulatory powers to protect passengers' interest.

Aviation Minister Praful Patel statement:

"The government reiterates its advice to private airlines against suspending operations on August 18. The government can't be expected to help private airlines financially. If required, the DGCA will take appropriate action under its regulatory powers to protect passenger interest. Air India will stand up to its national responsibility and will mount additional flights on the August 18 to minimize inconvenience to the public."

The airlines are making ridiculous demands. Their coming together on this issue is cartelization & they should be prosecuted. Also, I believe that huge amounts collected by them as tax are not being given to the government.-- This is criminal

I am with the government this time. We should not give even a single paisa to these rich owners mis managed airlines..they entered in this business to make money and they made money..now when the time is tough they should now bring the profit out of their pocket and inject into the business..what rights do they have to ask taxpayers money for their own business ? I will be very disappointed if government takes decision to help these people..there are hundreds of other small businesses in the country who needs help and they dont have any other way to get money or dont have other profitable businesses..we should help them..that help will reach to the thousands of workers at least. Ask Mallya to stop spending millions of money in making the useless calendars etc PLEASE DO NOT HELP PRIVATE AIRLINES. PLEASE PLEASE
