BJP: Against the tide
Thursday June 4, 2009 , New Delhi, India

There's a story about Varun Gandhi that no one in the BJP will tell you on the record. It goes something like this. A party leader, who shall remain unnamed, rang the controversial young politician to invite him for a party function. "Varun," he said, "could you please come to ..." only to find that he had been cut off midstream by an irate Gandhi at the other end of the phone line. The 28-year old lit into his senior party colleague and reprimanded him for addressing him so casually by his first name. At the very least, he argued, he should have been called 'Varunji' for being the party's next big hope in Uttar Pradesh. The story gets even better. Despite the drubbing in UP (many BJP leaders privately blame Varun Gandhi's hate speech for polarising the Muslim vote in favour of the Congress), I'm told that the poet-turned-politician still fancies himself as the main contender for state president.

While the psychological delusions of Varun Gandhi are the subject of a whole different column, the man himself has come to represent all that is wrong with the BJP today. Simply put, the party suffers from paralysis every time it has to deal with its loony fringe. Usually, it dithers for so long on what stand to take that by the time its condemnation is made public,  it sounds effete and unconvincing. And then, as the media stomps all over it, the party slips into victim mode and tries to aggressively promote its vices as if they were virtues.

Once the preferred choice of India's middle class, the BJP is now in danger of losing the big metros entirely (Delhi and Mumbai were swept by the Congress). Its agenda seems woefully out of sync with its own vote base.  The opposition to the nuclear deal was a prime example. As a party leader confided to me in a private conversation, " no party can afford to go against the sentiments of its core constituency." And yet, by repeating the same mistakes over and over again, the party that had once positioned itself as the robust, rooted and nationalistic political alternative, now looks confused, anachronistic and weak.

Rewind to the Mangalore pub attacks. By the time the BJP decided to condemn them unequivocally, the attackers and the state government were seen to be on the same side. No one was ready to listen to the BJP argument that the Ram Sene was not a partner and had in fact, put up candidates against it in the previous Assembly elections. Ideological obfuscating had made the BJP look like a sympathiser of the attackers, even if it was not.

The Malegaon blasts and the entire 'Hindu Terror' issue proved to be another conundrum for the BJP. A party that had designed itself as absolutist (despite the IC 814 and Kandahar barter) on the matter of what it called 'Islamic terrorism' could not exactly afford doublespeak if allegations of terror links surfaced on the other side of the religious divide. But once again, the party dithered and dallied endlessly. Eventually, it ended up challenging the integrity of the police officer (Hemant Karkare, who died in 26/11) who was leading the investigations.

So much has already been said about how LK Advani and the BJP chose to handle Varun Gandhi's inflammatory campaign. But once again, the confused balancing act -- disowning the speech, but clinging on to the man who made it -- speaks to the essential existential crisis of the party.

Like many others, I believe that Advani is a politician with unimpeachable personal integrity. But more than that, I have always found him a thinking man -- with far too much intellectual curiosity -- to be at ease with petty bigotry. And yet, on so many key issues, Advani's public statements seemed to be at odds with his own comfort zone. It was almost as if the pulls and pushes of politics had forced him into positions he was not entirely at ease with. But it also underlined the lack of clarity in the BJP.

The party's Prime Ministerial candidate was trying to be moderate and extreme at the same time. It didn't work. Just as Vajpayee missed his moment in failing to push for Narenda Modi's removal after 2002, Advani's test as a leader for modern times was how he would handle Varun Gandhi. Both men will have to live with the knowledge that these two decisions have pushed the BJP along a trajectory that may not allow it to navigate contemporary India.

Where Narendra Modi goes from here will probably mark which road the BJP has decided to journey on. The whispers against him within the party have begun. All those rooting for him as perfect Prime Ministerial material have now begun to talk about his 'shrillness', his 'obsessive dislike of the Gandhi family' and his inability to reinvent himself into a politician with national acceptability. Yes, the verdict in Gujarat was largely status- quoits (with a marginal decline in vote share) but there was absolutely no Modi Magic outside the state. Will the BJP force Modi to apologise for the anti-Muslim riots or will it accept that without that, he will remain a powerful regional satrap and no more?

The most honest critique of the party has come from Arun Jaitley -- the man who led the election campaign in 2009. He has written about how New India is looking for 'moderation'. After an election that has proved that identity politics can travel only so far and no further, the question is whether he will be able to prevail upon his party? Will the right find its centre again? If it doesn't, the BJP may lose its way permanently.

Beautification Of City Ponds Forms Main Discussion At NMMC Standing Committee The recent NMMC Standing Committee saw important discussions on the conditions of ponds in the city. Navi Mumbai boosts of many water bodies, which are found in nodes like Vashi, Turbhe, Ghansoli, Digha, Airoli and others. However, due to negligence over the years by the administration, these water bodies are dying a slow death. The beauties of the ponds are marred with immersions of religious idols which are still seen floating in the pond. There is dumping of debris and washing of clothes in the pond by the locals which has deteriorated the beauty of these water bodies. However, very soon these ponds will get a new lease of life as NMMC has decided to beautify the city ponds at an approximate cost of Rs 16 crores. This became the main topic of discussion in the NMMC Standing Committee meet where member Shivram Patil accused the administration of moving slowly on the tender process to beautify ponds. The administration has received funds from the MMRDA for the same. NMMC Standing Committee Chairman Sandeep Naik too urged the administration to bring in more proposals to beautify the city ponds. Presently only one proposal has been put forth by the NMMC administration.

Guru Nanak Jayanthi is the birth anniversary of the founder of the Sikh faith On the auspicious day of the Sikhs, a bridge was also inaugurated by Ganesh Naik making another walkway for the devotees of the gurudwara. Speaking to the media, Ganesh Naik said that he was not with the Sikh community but was amongst one of them. He prayed for strength to bring happiness in people%u2019s lives. Guru Nanak Dev was a great seer, saint and mystic. A prolific poet and a unique singer of God's laudation, for the Sikhs he was the messenger of peace, love, truth and renaissance who spent most of his life in meditation and spiritual practices. Guru Nanak Dev believed in and preached the concept of one god, one without any physical form. That is why the Sikhs don't worship idols. http://www.ganeshnaik.com/ http://navimumbai-ganeshjinaik.blogspot.com/ http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Ganesh_Naik

NMMC Headquarters could be the country's new iconic marvel The satellite city would be soon getting an iconic structure in the form of the NMMC Headquarters under construction at CBD Belapur. Speaking on this iconic structure, NMMC Standing Committee Chairman Sandeep Naik, who is credited for pushing the project for a take off, said that there was a need for centralization of the various departments of NMMC, which would be achieved through this structure. While the building took time to get underway, the construction had already started. A unique factor of this building is that it would be an eco-friendly structure. The construction is in full swing with the raft of the basements fitted that in another 18 months the structure would be complete. Someone has very rightly said that patience is always rewarded, For over a decade, the corporators and officials of NMMC were waiting to have their own headquarters and as the work begins in full force at the site, looks like the wait is soon going to be over that too in style. For the project promises to not just be an iconic structure and a marvel of a landmark, but the NMMC Headquarters promise to be a civic wonder like no municipal corporation in the country.

Navi Mumbai puts faith in Ganesh Naiks Thane district Guardian Minister and Nationalist Congress Party's (NCP) candidate Ganesh Naik retained his Belapur seat registering 59,685 of the total 1,46,342 votes cast during October 13 assembly polls. Shiv Sena-BJP's joint candidate Suresh Haware, who was expected to give a tough fight to the NCP heavyweight, garnered 46,812 votes, while Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) candidate Rajendra Mahale and independent contestant Namdeo Rama Bhagat bagged 19,569 and 14,516 votes respectively. Naik maintained lead over other candidates right from the first round of the counting, held at Vashi's Sacred Heart School on Thursday. The veteran leader registered 429 more votes than Haware who received 2,222 votes in the first round. The initial two rounds saw Naik and Haware competing closely, but from the fifth round, the gap between the votes bagged by the two widened with Naik getting 3327 votes and the builder-turned-politician scoring 1,429 votes at the end of the round. By seventh round, Naik's lead soared by 6,418 and after 14th round he was 9,619 votes ahead and continued the rally till the final 23rd round. http://www.ganeshnaik.com/ http://navimumbai-ganeshjinaik.blogspot.com/http://navimumbai-ganeshjinaik.blogspot.com/ http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Ganesh_Naik

It%u2019s Again Ganesh Naik The Badshah Of Navi Mumbai Dynastic rule was made the single biggest allegation against the Naik family in these assembly elections. Every candidate made this an issue to attack Ganesh Naik and Sandeep Naik%u2019s candidature appealing voters to vote against them. But the voters have given a fitting reply to these allegations said Ganesh Naik after the results were announced as he once again established that he is the badshah of Navi Mumbai. With Dr. Sanjeev Naik having been given the parliamentary candidature from Thane Lok Sabha constituency, the allegations of dynastic rule by the Naik family had begun. And when Sandeep Naik%u2019s candidature was announced from Airoli, the opposition made dynastic rule of the Naik family a poll issue. So much so that the Congress corporators united and resigned from the party naming the past district Chief Namdeo Bhagat as the Congress rebel candidate against Ganesh Naik in Belapur constituency and Vasant Mhatre as the Congress rebel candidate from Airoli constituency. But the rebel factor seems to have had no impact on the electoral results as NCP candidates won with a comfortable lead in both Airoli and Belapur constituency. http://www.ganeshnaik.com/ http://navimumbai-ganeshjinaik.blogspot.com/ http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Ganesh_Naik

Under the chairmanship of Sandeep Naik, the NMMCs standing committee has excelled in performance On October 15, 2007, he ordered the administration to strict action on the illegal structures that obstructed the corporation%u2019s development projects in Navi Mumbai. In the same meeting, water shortage in the due to water distribution flaws, was discussed. He took a firm stand no compromise would be made on essentials services like water supply .He remarked that the irregular water supply. He remarked that the irregular water supply was improper when a promise of 24-hours water supply was made in the budget. He instantly ordered the administration to improve the water supply by studying the zone wise supply modus and quantum from each source. Shri Sandeep Naik is perhaps the first chairman of the corporation who chaired the budget meeting for hours, uninterrupted and made innovative suggestions like the citizen-card and infused fresh thing of the budget

Don't worry. BJP shall bounce back in the metros. It lost in the metros and the election 2009 because of the absence of a wave which shall be created in the coming five years by dynamic workers who shall take the party to 300 seats in the Lok Sabha.

To me as common man of India BJP seems to be a party of elites ,for the elites by the elites and of the elites, but in reality party has vision of making great India excluding the reality. In the era of globalisation and liberalisation BJP need complete consciece reform.

BJP. I'll remember the Party with a difference, which brought in revolutionary growth in the Highways, Telecom, Banking & infrastructure with exemplory speed in execution of projects with clear mandate & agenda. If at all it fails to rise in the given circumstances, God Bless this Country, for we still have a very good number of people under privileged (purposely kept by certain class), even after 60 years of independence, not knowing what difference their vote make's to this country. It's sad / unfortunate to hear that, the roads were not built an inch further during UPA regime. So harsh are these people to nation's development.

You are absolutely right. The BJP government in Gujarat (the Collector) has banned cow slaughter during the Jain festival of "Pajushan". But , to please the masters the collector of Navsari has also banned the Chicken centers from being open during the period. Incidentally y/day 19th August was "Pateti" the Parsi New Year and the Parsis wanted the Chicken Shops to be open. The Jains have demanded that even the fish market during this period should be closed. Are such petty religious matters so important that the Government should interfere in private religious practices. This is one of the exmples of intolerance the BJP has taught people since Modi came tro power.

i totally agree with your statement.......as i myself once liked bjp as a kid .but now as an indian citizen(though only 16 years)really dislike the party. All they want is to win against rivals by any means their main priority is to beat congress ,that's all they want to do.The only ray of hope for B.J.P. is to rather do something for the people in their regions and for the country to win back their lost support and why not form an alliance with the congress??...i know i'm asking way too much "from indian politics" but that's how we should start.....so better start asking!!!!

Hi I agree with you in that BJP is faced with a serious identity crisis. But i think it is its own making. a party that has based its electoral platform on divisive politics and bigotry cannot change stripes and expect the voters to believe it. The fact is that BJP is responsible for some of the bloodiest acts in the country. Gujarat riots, Babri masjid, and before that, rath yatra, there is no way the part can wash its hands off these incidents. and these incidents will prevent the party from gaining a pan-india acceptance.

I agree that BJP is confronted with an existential crisis. but it is it's own making. This party cannot get away from the fact that it was responsible for the Ram Janmabhoomi Rath Yatra and the demolition of Babri Masjid. Nor can it absolve itself or Narendra Modi from the responsibility for Gujarat riots. these two incidents will haunt them for all time to come; and no matter what Mr.Modi has to say, he just cannot get be delinked from the riots in his state. I think the same goes for Advani. Which is why these two leaders don't have a pan-india appeal.

HE BELONGS TO A NEW RELIGION I.E TERRORISM NOTE: SAY NO TO TERRORIM....!!!!
