The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will soon install project information signboards with QR codes across the national highway network to provide commuters with instant access to essential information while travelling. The announcement was made via a press release issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, which said the initiative aims to enhance transparency and ensure ‘ease of commuting' for highway users.

According to the release, the vertical QR code signboards will display project-specific details such as the national highway number, chainage, project length, and the duration of construction and maintenance periods. Travellers will also be able to access emergency helpline numbers, including 1033, along with contact details of key officials such as the highway patrol, toll manager, project manager, resident engineer, and NHAI field offices.

In addition, the QR codes will offer digital access to nearby emergency and utility services, including hospitals, petrol pumps, toilets, police stations, restaurants, vehicle repair shops, truck lay-byes, toll plazas and electric vehicle charging stations. The move is aimed at improving road safety and helping commuters locate essential services in case of emergencies.

For better visibility, NHAI plans to install the signboards at key points along highways, such as toll plazas, rest areas, wayside amenities, truck lay-byes, and the start and end points of highway stretches.

“Apart from providing specific information about the National Highway stretches and enhancing transparency, the QR code signboards will not only help to enhance road safety through better access to emergency and local information but also go a long way in improving user experience and awareness about National Highways across the country,” the ministry said.
