As a severe heatwave continues to scorch parts of north India, including Delhi, travellers are heading to the hills in search of respite. Uttarakhand's popular hill station Mussoorie is witnessing a surge in visitors, especially from Delhi and neighbouring regions, as soaring temperatures make life in the capital increasingly uncomfortable.

On April 25, 2026, Delhi recorded a temperature of 42.8 degrees Celsius, marking its hottest day of the year so far. With heat stress intensifying, authorities have issued a yellow alert for the coming days and rolled out a heatwave action plan to manage rising health risks.

Visuals shared by ANI on April 26 show a steady stream of vehicles moving along the Dehradun-Mussoorie road. While the footage captures a noticeable increase in traffic heading uphill, it does not show any major congestion or traffic jams at this stage.

Several tourists cited the stark contrast in weather as their main reason for travelling. Vinod Kumar, visiting Mussoorie from Delhi, told ANI, "The weather here is very nice. Delhi is so hot, and there is so much dust that it becomes difficult to breathe properly. After coming here, we are finally able to sleep well. Mussoorie is wonderful. From here, we plan to go to Rishikesh and then return home to Delhi."

Another tourist, Sandhya, echoed similar sentiments, saying, "It is extremely hot in Delhi, but the weather here is so pleasant. We are travelling for three to four days, and our entire family, including cousins, has come together."

Delhi-Dehradun Expressway

Easier road access has also played a role in boosting tourist movement to Uttarakhand. With the inauguration of the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, road trips to Mussoorie and the surrounding areas have become significantly quicker and more convenient.

Stretching over approximately 210 kilometres, the expressway has reduced the travel time between Delhi and Dehradun from around 6.5 hours to nearly 2.5 hours. This means visitors can now reach Mussoorie from Delhi in roughly 3.5 to 4 hours - almost half the time it took earlier - making the hill station an attractive option for weekend breaks and short getaways.

However, travellers have pointed out that bottlenecks remain after exiting the expressway. Social media users noted that while the Delhi-to-Dehradun stretch now takes about 2.5 hours, the onward drive within Dehradun can still take close to two hours due to traffic congestion and urban roads.

Constructed Of Dehradun Bypass To Manage Traffic

To address this issue, infrastructure work is underway to improve traffic flow around Dehradun. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is currently constructing a 12-kilometre-long, four-lane, access-controlled Dehradun bypass. Designed as a greenfield project, the bypass aims to reduce congestion within the city and improve regional connectivity.

The new route will connect Jhajhra to the Paonta Sahib-Ballupur section of National Highway 7 and link up with the Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor near the Asharori check post in Dehradun district. Built at an estimated cost of Rs 716 crore, the project has already achieved around 44 per cent physical progress and is expected to be completed by April 2027.

Once operational, the bypass will serve as an alternate south-western route, diverting non-essential traffic away from Dehradun's urban core. This is expected to ease traffic pressure within the city while also reducing vehicular pollution. It will improve access towards the Selaqui industrial area, Vikasnagar and Herbertpur in Uttarakhand, as well as Paonta Sahib in neighbouring Himachal Pradesh.

In the meantime, with temperatures continuing to rise in Delhi, Mussoorie, and other hill destinations in Uttarakhand are likely to remain crowded as travellers seek cooler climate and a brief escape from the heat.
