Woman shot dead over land dispute

Ludhiana: A 35-year-old woman was on Tuesday shot dead in full public view in a village in Meharban area here over a land dispute, police said.

The incident took place in village Kakka when the victim Rani appeared before the panchayat to resolve the land dispute with Jagjit Singh.

According to the police, the dispute between the two parties was over their claim on the 16 acres of ancestral land in the adjoining village Dholla.

Jagjit, his wife Roop Kaur, their sons Simmi and Amrit were also summoned by the panchayat to resolve the issue.

The panchayat held a meeting at the house of Karamjit Singh, where Jagjit raised objection over its opinion to give the disputed land to Rani.

The woman, who had come with her driver, entered into a heated argument with Jagjit and his two sons, the police said.

Roop Kaur caught hold of Rani during the altercation.

Before the panchayat could get a sense of what was happening, Amrit allegedly pulled out a revolver from her mother's purse and fired two shots killing Rani on the spot, they said, adding the accused then fled the scene in their SUV.

The accused have been identified and booked for murder, Sumit Sood, SHO, Meharban police station, said.

"We have launched a manhunt to nab the accused," he said.
