People often believe in a number of diet myths without really knowing the depth of the issue. One such thing that people are majorly concerned about is that 'Eating after 8pm'. There is often conjecture about whether or not eating late at night can make you put on weight. This is just another pet peeve as Nutritionist Simran Saini says. It isn't about when, but what you eat and how much you eat that really matters. She suggests that one should always look for the calorie content and trans fats, before putting something in their mouth.
Hence, we thought of elaborating more on this issue and providing you with a list of snacks that you can eat, guilt-free, when you feel hungry late at night.
1. Egg Whites
All natural and a great source of protein, egg whites are a low-calorie food. With approximately just 17 calories - opposed to 71 per whole egg, they make a great guilt-free food option. You can always make them in different ways, though the best way is to eat them hard boiled. You can even scramble some egg whites together, or bake an omelette and add some oregano and chilli flakes on top.
2. Plain Yogurt
Plain yogurt contains only 150 calories per cup and about 13g of protein. It is one of the best midnight snacks as it even helps with digestion. Just remember not to add your favourite toppings (read: chocolate sprinkles or plain sugar!) on top of it. Consuming flavoured yogurt is not a great idea either if you're looking to cut down on calorie content. Just add some plain yogurt, or greek yogurt on top of your favourite fruits and you have a delicious snack.
3. Celery and Hummus
Celery is a great diet staple because it has a lot of water content and contains only 16 calories in a cup. It also provides you with a generous amount of vitamin K. You can munch on these with hummus. It is high in protein, so it provides energy without packing on the pounds.
4. Blueberries
Blueberries are extremely famous for their delicious taste and nutrients. There are only 85 calories in a cup of blueberries. Low in calorie, high in fiber, packed with vitamin C, they have a tendency to keep your tummy full for a longer period of time.
5. Oats
A tiny bowl of oats with low fat or almond milk can generate a feeling of fullness, which could get you through your late night cravings and hunger pangs. Oatmeal can be a great snack before bed because it is rich in complex carbohydrates. A medium sized bowl of oatmeal usually contains 150-200 calories, depending on what you cook it with.
