Rajasthan: Bus falls into a gorge, 10 killed

New Delhi: At least 10 people were killed and 40 others seriously injured on Friday when a bus skidded off a rain-damaged road and fell into a 200-feet gorge in Mount Abu, the only hill station in Rajasthan, said police.

The mishap took place near Cheepa Beri area of the hill station around 5 p.m.

The Gujarat Roadways bus was going to Ahmedabad in Gujarat from Mount Abu in Sirohi district. "Most of them were domestic tourists who had come to the hill station on picnic," a police officer said.

The road to the hill station was damaged due to heavy downpour.

"Eye-witnesses told the police that the bus suddenly spun out of control and fell into the gorge," said the officer.

The personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and army were roped in for the rescue operation.

"Some 4-5 passengers are still feared trapped deep in the valley," said the officer.

"Ten bodies, including of three women, have been taken out and 40 passengers are undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Mount Abu," the district collector of Sirohi, Shreeram Meena, said.

The hill station is the highest point in the Aravali range, at 5,742 feet and is thronged by tourists during the monsoon season.
