New Delhi: Former Union Minister Jaswant Singh is in a "very critical" condition at the Intensive Care Unit of the Army's R and R Hospital in Delhi, the Defence ministry has said. He is on life support systems and is being monitored by a team of neurosurgeons.

The ministry said in a release that Mr Singh, a former defence minister, was brought to the hospital "in a highly critical condition around 0100 hrs today with injury to his head." Examination at the hospital showed him to be in coma, it said.

The senior politician was found unconscious at his home in the capital and was rushed by his family to the hospital, where he was operated upon.

Senior BJP leader LK Advani and former party president Rajnath Singh visited the hospital. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Mr Singh's family and prayed for his "speedy recovery," the Prime Minister's Office said.

The 76-year-old leader was expelled from the BJP earlier this year after he decided to contest the general elections from his home district Barmer in Rajasthan as an Independent when the party fielded someone else.
