Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Oath Ceremony Highlights: Himanta Biswa Sarma took oath as the Assam chief minister for a second consecutive term in Guwahati. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and BJP national president Nitin Nabin, along with over NDA chief ministers and deputy chief ministers were present at the grand event at the Khanapara Veterinary College Field.

Barricades, traffic diversions, and multi-layered security deployments have been put in place around the Khanapara area.

This will be the third NDA government in Assam, and Sarma has become the only non-Congress chief minister to achieve the feat in the state.

Along with Sarma, four MLAs - two from the BJP and one each from its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People's Front (BPF) - also took oaths as ministers. They include Rameswar Teli, Atul Bora (AGP), Charan Boro (BPF) and Ajanta Neog. Former minister and senior BJP leader Ranjeet Kumar Dass will be the NDA's candidate for the position of Speaker of the state Assembly.

The first Cabinet meeting of the new government would be held shortly after the swearing-in ceremony. Sarma said implementation of the Bharatiya Janata Party's electoral commitments and development agenda would remain the government's top priority in its new term.

The NDA, comprising the BJP, AGP and BPF, secured a sweeping mandate in the assembly polls, winning a record 102 seats in the 126-member House. The BJP alone bagged 82, its first single-party majority in the state, while AGP and BPF won 10 seats each.

AGP's Atul Bora Has Held Several Key Portfolios

AGP president Atul Bora has been leading the regional party since 2014. A former president of the All Assam Students' Union, he was among the leaders shaped by the anti-foreigners Assam Agitation of 1979-85.

A five-time MLA, Bora first entered the assembly in 1996 from Golaghat before shifting to Bokakhat in 2016, a seat he has retained for three straight terms. The 66-year-old leader held key portfolios such as Agriculture, Border Areas Development and Assam Accord Implementation in the previous NDA governments.

Tea Tribe Leader Becomes Minister In Himanta Sarma's Cabinet

A prominent tea tribe leader, BJP's Rameswar Teli is making his debut in the state cabinet after serving as a Union minister of state in the Narendra Modi government. Associated with politics since his student days, he first entered the assembly in 2001 from Duliajan constituency and retained the seat in 2006.

After losing the 2011 Assembly election, he shifted to national politics, winning the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha seat in 2014 and retaining it in 2019. He has also served as a Rajya Sabha MP. Teli, 55, returned to the assembly this year from Duliajan.

About BJP's Ajanta Neog, Sworn In As Assam Minister

A six-time MLA from Golaghat, Ajanta Neog is the state's longest-serving woman legislator, representing the constituency continuously since 2001. She also became the state's first and only woman finance minister after assuming the portfolio in 2021.

Previously a Congress leader and minister in the Tarun Gogoi-led governments, 62-year-old Neog joined the BJP in 2020 and retained her seat in a bypoll. Her husband, former Congress minister Nagen Neog, was killed in a militant attack in 1996.

Meet Himanta Biswa Sarma, The "Chanakya" Of Assam

Having known Himanta Biswa Sarma for more than a decade, I've witnessed not just the politician but the man - ambitious, sharp-witted, deeply rooted in Assamese ethos, yet pragmatic in navigating India's complex political landscape.

Our paths crossed during his ministerial years in Congress government in 2011 and evolved through his transformative journey.

To me, he remains "Dada", but for Assam, he is "Mama".

He is a strategist whose intellect often leaves observers in awe.
