New Hyundai Compact SUV Snapped Testing In India

Hyundai's upcoming compact SUV has been caught on camera for the very first time during road testing in Mumbai, offering a glimpse into what could be the brand's next big launch in India. Two prototypes were seen together, both heavily camouflaged, which strongly suggests that Hyundai is trialing multiple trims of the same model. The differences in exterior detailing between the two test cars point toward a lower-spec and a higher-spec variant being evaluated simultaneously.

Although the disguise hides most of the finer styling cues, the overall silhouette makes it clear that this is not a facelift of an existing Hyundai product but a completely new addition to the portfolio. The SUV carries a squared-off stance, reminiscent of the Venue and Creta, but with sharper proportions that hint at a fresh design language. One of the most striking elements visible through the camouflage is the pixel-style LED lighting signature at both ends. This design motif has become a hallmark of Hyundai's global EV range, seen prominently on the Ioniq series and the recently introduced Inster EV. The upright windscreen angle and closed-off front fascia further reinforce the impression that this prototype is a battery-electric vehicle rather than an internal combustion derivative.

Other details spotted include flush door handles, a silver trim piece near the rear window, and a shark-fin antenna. At the back, the SUV sports slim LED tail lamps with a pixelated arrangement, echoing the look of the Ioniq 5. A muscular rear bumper with vertically stacked reflectors adds to the rugged appeal, while large outside mirrors with integrated cameras suggest that advanced features such as a 360-degree camera system and possibly Level 2 driver assistance could be on the cards.

Though the cabin remains hidden, reports indicate that the test mule was fitted with a sizeable touchscreen infotainment unit, aligning with Hyundai's push toward tech-heavy interiors. No official specifications have been released yet, but industry chatter points to this model being the rugged SUV Hyundai teased during its investor presentation last year. If that is indeed the case, the vehicle could be built on a monocoque platform with all-wheel-drive capability, designed to balance urban usability with off-road versatility.

Another possibility is that this prototype represents Hyundai's smallest EV offering, potentially a sibling to Kia's upcoming EV2. The absence of a visible exhaust outlet lends weight to this theory. Whether positioned as a compact electric SUV or a rugged crossover, the new model is clearly intended to expand Hyundai's footprint in one of India's most competitive segments. With testing now underway, more details are expected to surface in the coming months, setting the stage for what could be a significant launch for the brand.
