The Maruti Suzuki Baleno facelift has been spotted testing, sparking fresh speculation about what changes the popular premium hatchback could receive next. While cosmetic updates are expected as part of the mid-life refresh, the bigger talking point is whether Maruti Suzuki could follow the new Dzire's path and move the Baleno to a three-cylinder petrol engine.

As of now, there is no official confirmation from Maruti Suzuki. The Baleno continues to be listed on the company's website with its existing powertrain options. However, recent developments in Maruti's small-car strategy suggest a shift could be under consideration.

The test mule spotted on Indian roads appears to be wearing camouflage, indicating a facelift rather than an all-new generation. Changes seem limited to:
- Minor front and rear bumper updates
- A new connected LED DRL
- Subtle interior updates and feature additions
The overall silhouette and proportions remain unchanged, suggesting Maruti is focusing on freshening the Baleno rather than reinventing it.
The Big Question: A 3-Cylinder Engine Next?
The speculation around a three-cylinder engine comes from Maruti Suzuki's recent decision to transition the Dzire and Swift to a new Z-Series three-cylinder petrol motor. The move was aimed at improved low-RPM driveability while complying with tighter emission norms.

Currently, the Baleno is powered by a 1.2-litre, K-series, four-cylinder, naturally-aspirated petrol engine, which is famous for its refinement and smooth performance. A switch to a three-cylinder unit would mark a significant mechanical change for the Baleno. Although, the Maruti Suzuki's Z12 motor is the most-refined 3-cylinder on sale in the country under Rs 20 lakh, period. It puts out 82 Hp against 112 Nm of max torque. Also, it rules the roost for the mileage it delivers. For the Swift and Dzire, Maruti Suzuki claims 25.75 kmpl and 25.71 kmpl, respectively.
To offer the same frugality and driveability on the faceliffted Maruti Suzuki Baleno, the automaker could make a move to use the new Z12e motor. However, there's no official word from Maruti Suzuki yet about this change.
