Automotive enthusiasts who are also adventure seekers often go for the toughest SUVs on the market. To zero down on the choices, the qualities often considered are the 4x4 system, ladder-on-frame chassis, a tough engine and most of all the ability to go anywhere. The Indian market has loads of choices that offer these qualities. However, when budget constraints are in play, the options are limited. Here are a few SUVs I would pick if I had a limited budget.

Mahindra Thar Roxx
Mahindra Thar Roxx not only carries the legacy of one of the most famous off-road capable SUVs in India, but also brings improvements. It comes at a starting price of Rs 12.39 lakh (ex-showroom) and goes up to Rs 22.25 lakh (ex-showroom). It offers the option of petrol and diesel engines. However, the 4x4 option is available with the 2.2-litre diesel unit, which gets 171 hp of power and 370 Nm of peak torque. Transmission options include MT and AT. To make things better, it also gets various terrain modes.

Maruti Suzuki Jimny
Maruti Suzuki Jimny has been a global hit and is known to punch above its weight category when it comes to off-road capabilities. Currently sold at a starting price of Rs 12.32 lakh (ex-showroom), the SUV employs the reliable 1.5-litre K15B naturally aspirated engine with 105 hp of power and 134 Nm of peak torque. It comes with the option of AT and MT with the brand's ALLGRIP Pro 4x4 system. To make things better, it has a rigid axle suspension, which helps on tough terrain.

Force Gurkha
The butch-looking SUV is sold at Rs 17.26 lakh (ex-showroom). Although a very underrated option, it comes with a Mercedes-derived 2.6-litre diesel engine, which produces 140 hp of power and 320 Nm of peak torque with an MT. It also offers one of the highest ground clearances of 233 cm, 18-inch wheels and independent double-wishbone front suspension.

Mahindra Bolero Camper
The bonus option on the list is the Mahindra Bolero Camper, a pickup truck. Initially sold as a commercial vehicle, the pickup is also available for private buyers in some states. Under the hood is a 2.7-litre m2DiCR engine, which has been tried and tested over the years. This unit produces 75 hp of power and 200 Nm of peak torque. The vehicle has 4x4 on offer and is a popular choice when it comes to travelling in rural areas.
