Knee-Jerk 'Dhokla' Diplomacy: Congress on India-Pakistan Talks Being Canceled
New Delhi: India today called off foreign secretary level talks with Pakistan scheduled next week, sending out a strong message that its envoy's engagement with Kashmiri separatist leaders was unacceptable.
  • Recently, there have been incidents of ceasefire violation by Pakistan. Earlier it was at Line of Control, now it also happens at International Borders. It is for Pakistan to decide which type of relationship they want with us.
    Arun Jaitley, Finance Minister
  • This knee-jerk diplomacy shows that hey do not have any clear policy towards Pakistan.
    Manish Tewari, Congress Leader
  • The BJP-led government has learned it the hard way that there are no short-cuts to diplomatic processes particularly those having a long history.
    Amarinder Singh, Congress Leader
  • The BJP government has never presented any clear policy on Pakistan. Why was the process of starting the dialogue initiated at first? When they were in the opposition, they were shouting on every ceasefire violations committed by Pakistan. Why only now have they woken up to the need to stop the dialogue?
    Anand Sharma, Congress Leader
  • This shows India doesn't want to discuss Kashmir with Pakistan, they want to discuss trade. Let them declare they only want to have trade ties.
Yasin Malik, Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front Chairman
  • It is a knee-jerk reaction. We have been talking to Pakistani leadership even during Vajpayee's government. It doesn't work well for a peace process between India and Pakistan.
    Mirwaiz Farooq, Hurriyat Leader
