Erode: A 17-year-old school student in Tamil Nadu's Erode District allegedly hanged herself, reportedly upset after a teacher scolded her for poor performance. The girl's parents and locals held a protest demanding the teacher's arrest.

The girl was a student of the Government Higher Secondary School in Thandaampalayam. Investigators say she had skipped classes for five days last week after her Zoology teacher, Ms Eswari, scolded her for her poor performance.

When she returned to school on Monday, the teacher scolded her again and asked her to bring her parents to school. The girl's parents say she was so ashamed by the scolding that she returned home and committed suicide.

"She was a bright student. The teacher took her on for no reason. We want her arrested," said Appu Kutti, a relative.

On Wednesday, her parents and many local people protested at Othapanai village demanding that the teacher be arrested. Police have registered a case of abetment of suicide. Senior police official MR Sibi Chakravarthy said, "We are probing. The teacher says she had scolded her only in good intent."
