Police filed a chargesheet on Saturday in the rape and murder case of Kerala law student Jisha
Kerala Police's special investigation team probing the gruesome rape and murder of Jisha, a 30-year-old law student in Ernakulam, has claimed conclusive evidence against the prime accused Ameer-ul-Islam in its chargesheet filed today.
Ameer, a migrant labour from Assam was arrested 50 days after Jisha's body was found battered with bruises from sharp objects with her intestines pulled out, at her home in Perumbavoor in May. Ameer was soon after declared the prime accused.
The chargesheet which runs into 1,500 pages has statements of witnesses including Ameer's friends along with Jisha's neighbour who claims to have seen the accused leaving Jisha's house after the murder. The police say Ameer had entered the house with the intension of raping Jisha but hit her sharp objects after she resisted which led to her death.
Ameer has been charged with rape, murder and under the Dalit Atrocities Prevention Act.
Jisha's mother spent days in a hospital recovering from shock of her daughter's brutal murder. Speaking to reporters after the chargesheet was filed, she said, "There should not be another death like that of my daughter. People who do such things must not have the privilege of so much time before the trial begins, of comfortable and good food in jail and should never be granted bail. What happened to my daughter must be taken very seriously."
The brutality of the crime and the fact that Jisha struggled with poor living conditions - a one-room home without a toilet shared with her mother and sister - had invoked massive protests across Kerala.
