Mamata woos industrialists

At Mamata Banerjee's first interaction with industrialists after becoming West Bengal Chief Minister, the focus was very much on land acquisition. And Mamata, very clear on the way forward, said that the government did not want to have a role in land acquisition.

"You may or may not agree with me, but land can only be bought. Taking it forcefully is just not an option," Mamata said.

The meeting with industrialists came just days after the West Bengal government passed a bill, taking back the Nano factory land from the Tata's at Singur.

No prominent Tata Group faces were present, and Anil Ambani is expected to meet Mamata later this year.

There was a debate about Bengal's work culture, which Mamata promised to improve. And one step in that direction could be her promise of no more unnecessary bandhs and strikes.

Industrialists responded positively, to say the least.

"The situation in Bengal has changed; this is conducive to investment," said industrialist Adi Godrej.

Another major decision which the Bengal government took is the formation of a a core committee, with industrialists as members, that will meet every week.
