About Darjeeling

The Darjeeling Lok Sabha constituency will go to polls on April 18 in the second phase of Lok Sabha election. The parliamentary constituency number 4, Darjeeling, has seven segments-Kalimpong, Darjeeling, Kurseong, Matigara-Naxalbaro, Siliguri, Phansidewa and Chopra. In the 17th Lok Sabha election, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Raju Singh Bisht and Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate Amar Singh Rai will contest for the seat along with other party contenders. While Congress has nominated Sankar Malakar for the seat, CPI (M) has fielded Saman Pathak to contest for the Darjeeling seat.

In the 2014 general election, SS Ahluwalia had won the seat with a BJP ticket. Mr Ahluwalia had defeated, former Indian footballer, Bhaichung Bhutia who was contesting the election as a TMC candidate and later on left the party and established his own party named "Hamro Sikkim Party".

A total of 11,42,009 voters had exercised their franchise in the 16th Lok Sabha election in which BJP got 42.73% of the total votes and TMC garnered 25.47% votes. A total of 18,045 votes were given under the NOTA option.

Since the last two terms, BJP has been winning the Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat. CPI (M) has represented Darjeeling constituency in the Lok Sabha for 6 terms.
