Results for West Bengal, arguably the most hotly contested political battlefield in the country, will be declared on Monday. Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress Chairperson Mamata Banerjee is seeking to ensure the state, which has been her fortress for 15 years, remains impregnable against the BJP, which has mounted an all-out offensive. While the Trinamool Congress won a comfortable victory in 2021, winning over 200 of the state’s 294 constituencies, the BJP is more confident this time around and has a much stronger presence on the ground.

One of the key factors in this election is the Special Intensive Revision of voter lists, which has led to the names of 91 lakh electors being dropped. This may alter the outcome in several seats where the victory margins have been slim.

The Trinamool Congress, however, has said the SIR, which it alleges was done in a hurried manner and to “benefit” the BJP, has led to anger among the people. Banerjee has also urged voters to express this anger through the ballot box and take “revenge” in a democratic manner.

Most exit polls have given the BJP an edge. Praja Poll has predicted that the BJP will win 178-208 seats, up from 77 in 2021, while the TMC will be restricted to 85-110. On the other end of the spectrum, Janmat Polls has predicted between 195 and 205 seats for the Trinamool and 80-90 for the BJP, which is very close to the figures both parties had in the 2021 elections.
