About Bolpur

The Bolpur parliamentary constituency will vote on April 29 in the fourth phase of the Lok Sabha election 2019. The constituency comprises Ketugram, Mangalkot, Ausgram, Bolpur, Nanoor, Labpur and Mayureswar segments. The number 41 constituency in the State, Bolpur was a free seat till 2004. From 2009 general election, Ausgram and Nanoor seats are reserved for scheduled castes. 

This time the ruling party, Trinamool Congress (TMC) has nominated Asit Kumar Mal to contest from the Bolpur seat. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded Ram Prasad Dam for the seat in this election.

Bolpur, once a Left Bastion, was won by the TMC in 2014 general election. Anupam Hazra is the current MP of the constituency. Mr Hazra had defeated CPI (M) candidate Dr. Ram Chandra Dome. Dr Dome was the elected MP from Birbhum constituency from 1989 to 2004. 

In the 16th Lok Sabha election, held in 2014, votes for TMC constituted 48.33% of the total votes received. Anupam Hazra had won by a margin of 2,36,112 votes.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) had won the Bolpur seat from 1971 to 2009 during which Somnath Chatterjee had represented the constituency seven times and Saradish Roy four times. Somnath Chatterjee was the Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 2004-2009. He was the member of the CPI (M) from 1973 to 2008.

AK Chanda was the first MP of the Bolpur constituency and was elected in the 1967 general election.
