About Birbhum

The Birbhum is the 42nd constituency in the State. It consists of Dubrajpur, Suri, Sainthia, Rampurhat, Hansan, Nalhati and Murarai segments. Dubrajpur and Sainthia are reserved for scheduled castes. Birbhum will vote in the fourth phase of the 17th Lok Sabha election on April 29. Birbhum is also called the land of red soil. The place is also famous for the Visva Bharati University which was established by Rabindranath Tagore and the Baul folk singers. 

In 2019 general election, two-time winning candidate, Shatabdi Roy of Trinamool Congress (TMC) party has been nominated again for the Birbhum seat in the general election. Ms Roy has been representing the constituency in the Parliament since 2009. She had defeated six-time MP of the constituency, CPI (M) candidate Dr Ram Chandra Dome, in 2009. CPI (M) was the ruling party in the constituency from 1971 and Gadadhar Saha represented the seat for the initial four-terms. 

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded Dudh Kumar Mondal for the Birbhum seat in the 17th Lok Sabha election. Likewise Rezaul Karim will contest from the seat with a CPI (M) ticket. 

Congress had a stronghold on the seat for six terms.

In the 16th Lok Sabha election, held in 2014, CPI (M) candidate Dr Mohammed Qamre Elahi got 30.825 of the total votes. The winning party had received 4,60,568 votes. BJP was the second runner-up party and had received 18.47% of the total votes.
