In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Ramashankar Rajbhar was elected in Uttar Pradesh on a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) ticket. He won the Salempur seat in Uttar Pradesh with 1,75,088 votes by a margin of 18,305 votes defeating Dr Bhola Pandey of the INC, who received 1,56,783 votes.

There are five assembly seats under the Salempur constituency which includes Bhatpur Rani, Sikanderpur and Bansdih. While the Salempur constituency is also reserved for scheduled caste category which includes Salempur assembly.
There are total fifteen candidates out of which four is independent. Ravinder from BJP, R.S. Kushwala from the BSP and Rajesh Kumar Mishra from the Indian National Congress among the key candidates who are contesting for the Lok Sabha 2019 elections.
In 2019, voting was conducted in the seventh phase on May 19 in Salempur constituency of Uttar Pradesh. The Lok Sabha 2019 results will be announced on May 23.
