In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Raghav Lakhanpal was elected from Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh on a BJP ticket. He received 4,72,999 votes. His closest opponent was Imran Masood from the Congress who received 4,07,909 votes.
The Saharanpur seat remained a Congress stronghold from 1952 to 1977.
In 1977, for the first time a candidate from Janta Party was elected to parliament. In 1980 Rasheed Masood from Janta Party was elected followed by Chaudhary Yashpal Singh from Congress in 1984. In 1989 and 1991, the Janta Dal candidate was elected from Saharanpur. Then the seat was won up by BJP candidate in 1996 and 1998.
In 1999, BSP candidate was elected. In 2004, SP candidate was elected while in 2009 BSP candidate was elected to parliament from Saharanpur.
There are five assembly seats under the Saharanpur Parliamentary constituency - Behat, Saharanpur Nagar, Saharanpur, Deoband, Rampur Maniharan.
The General Election 2019 has been conducted in the first phase, on April 11, in Saharanpur. For the upcoming elections, the BJP has fielded Raghav Lakhanpal, the sitting MP, while the Congress has fielded Imran Masood, and BSP has fielded Fazlur Rahman, a local businessman.
