In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Rajendra Agarwal was elected from Meerut in Uttar Pradesh on a BJP ticket. He received 5,32,981 votes. His closest opponent was Shahid Akhlaq from Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) who received 3,00,655 votes.
The Meerut seat was won by Congress candidates from 1952-62. The seat remained a Socialist party stronghold from 1962 to 1971.
Between 1971-77, Congress candidate was elected to parliament. Then in the period 1977-80, Janta Party candidate was elected followed by Congress candidate between 1989-91.
Then from 1991-99, BJP candidates were elected thrice to the Parliament from Meerut. Then Congress candidate was elected to parliament between 1999-2004. From 2004 to 2009 the seat remained with BSP. In the next two consecutive elections, the Meerut seat has been with BJP.
There are five assembly seats under the Meerut Parliamentary constituency. These include Kithore, Meerut Cantonment., Meerut South, Meerut, and Hapur. Hapur seat is reserved for SC candidates.
The General Election 2019 were conducted in the first phase, on April 11, in Meerut. For the upcoming elections Congress has fielded Harendra Agarwal, and BSP has fielded Hazi Mohammad Yakoob, against the sitting MP Rajendra Agarwal who will again contest on a BJP ticket.
