In the 2014 General Elections, Hema Malini contested and won the Mathura seat in Uttar Pradesh for BJP. She received 5,74,633 votes and won by a margin of 3,30,743 votes. Her closest opponent was Jayant Chaudhary from RLD who visited 2,43,890 votes. The voter turnout in Mathura in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections was 64.10 per cent.
The runner-up of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Jayant Chaudhary had won from the Mathura constituency in 2009. He had received 3,79,870 votes. His closest opponent was BSP's Shyam Sunder Sharma who received 2,10,257 votes. The voter turnout in 2009 was 54.15 per cent.
Before 2014, BJP had claimed Mathura seat in 1991, 1996, and 1998 elections as well. In 1991, Swami Sakshi Ji won from Mathura on a BJP ticket and in 1996 and 1998 Tejveer from BJP was elected. In 2004, the seat went to Manvendra Singh from Congress.
For the General Election 2019, BJP has again fielded Hema Malini. Kunwar Narendra Singh will be contesting on a ticket from RLD party and Mahesh Pathak has been fielded by Congress. Hema Malini, the incumbent MP, is a veteran Indian film actress who joined BJP in 2004.
There are five assembly segments under the Mathura constituency. These include Mant, Govardhan, Chhata, Baldev, and Mathura.
