In the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections, Mulayam Singh, the Samajwadi party stalwart, was elected from the Mainpuri seat in Uttar Pradesh. He received 5,95,918 votes. His closest opponent was Shatrughan Singh Chauhan from BJP who received 2,31,252 votes. However, Mulayam Singh Yadav vacated the seat and Tej Pratap Yadav, also from Samajwadi Party, was elected from Mainpuri.
In the 1957 elections, Bansi Das Dhangar was elected from Mainpuri on PSP ticket. Then in 1962, Congress candidate Badshah Gupta was elected from Mainpuri. In 1967 and 1977, Maharaj Singh, also from Congress, was elected. In 1977 and 1980 Raghunath Singh Verma was elected, once on a ticket from BLD and then on a ticket from JNP (S).
In 1984, Balram Singh Yadav from Congress was elected. In 1989 and 1991, Udai Pratap Singh was elected on a ticket from Janta Dal. In 1996, Mulayam Singh Yadav was elected on a ticket from SP. Then in 1998 and 1999, Balram Singh Yadav won from Mainpuri on an SP ticket. In 2004 and 2009, Mulayam Singh Yadav from SP returned to parliament from Mainpuri.
In the 2019 General Elections, Prem Singh Shakya, from BJP, will contest against Mulayam Singh Yadav who will strive to keep the seat for Samajwadi Party.
There are five assembly segments under the Mainpuri constituency. These include Bhongaon, Jaswantnagar, Karhal, Kishni, and Mainpuri.
