In the 2014 General Elections, Dimple Yadav, wife of Akhilesh Yadav, former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, was elected from Kannauj Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh. She contested for Samajwadi Party and received 4,89,164 votes. Her closest opponent was Subrat Pathak from BJP who received 4,69,257 votes.
In the 2009 General Election, Akhilesh Yadav, Samajwadi Party Chief, was elected from Kannauj. He received 3,37,751 votes. His closest opponent was Dr. Mahesh Chandra Verma from BSP who received 2,21,887 votes.
Kannauj seat has largely been a stronghold of Samajwadi Party, with three members of the same family being elected from this seat at separate times.
In the 1971 General Election, S.N. Misra from INC was elected from Kannauj. In 1977 election, Ram Prakash Tripathi from BLD was elected from Kannauj. In 1980, Chhotey Singh Yadav from JNP (S) was elected from Kannauj. In 1984, Sheila Dixit was elected on a ticket from INC.
In 1989, Chhotey Singh Yadav was elected again, this time on Janata Dal ticket. He was elected again in 1991 with a ticket from JP.
In 1996, Chandra Bhusan Singh from BJP was elected from the Kannauj constituency. In 1998, Pradeep Kumar Yadav was elected on a ticket from Samajwadi Party. In 1999, Mulayam Singh Yadav, Samajwaadi Party stalwart, was elected from Kannauj. Then in 2004, his son, Akhilesh Yadav was elected.
The 2019 General Elections in Kannauj were held in the fourth phase. Samajwadi Party fielded its sitting MP Dimple Yadav. BJP fielded Subrat Pathak, and Anand Vikram Singh was Shiv Sena’s candidate from Kannauj.
There are five assembly segments under the Kannauj Lok Sabha seat. These include Chhibramau, Tirwa, Kannauj, Bidhuna, and Rasulabad.
