In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Hukum Singh was elected from Kairana in Uttar Pradesh on a BJP ticket. He received 5,65,909 votes. His closest opponent was Nahid Hasan from Samajwadi Party (SP) who received 3,29,081 votes.
After the death of BJP MP Hukum Singh in 2018, the seat was won by Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) candidate Tabassum Hasan who defeated the BJP candidate Mriganka Singh. Tabassum Hasan comes from a family of politicians who have have won on the Kairana seat. Her father-in-law Chaudhary Akhtar Hasan was elected Member of Parliament in 1984. Her husband Munawwar Hasan was elected to state assembly twice, parliament twice, once to Rajya Sabha, and once to State Legislative Council.
First general election for the Kairana seat was held in 1967 when SSP candidate Ghayoor Ali Khan was elected to the parliament. In 1971, Shafqat Jung from Congress was elected followed by Chandan Singh from BLD in 1977.
In 1980 Gayatri Devi from JNP was elected followed by Akhtar Hasan from Congress in 1984. In 1989 and 1991 Harpal Singh from Janta Dal won from the Kairana seat. In 1996, Munawwar Ali from SP was elected to Parliament from Kairana.
In 1998, BJP candidate Virendra Verma was elected and in 1999 Amir Alam from RLD was elected. In 2004, Anuradha Chaudhary from RLD won while in 2009 Tabassum Hasan was elected.
There are five assembly seats under the Kairana Parliamentary constituency - Nakur, Gangoh, Kairana, Thana Bhawan, and Shamli.
The General Elections were conducted in the first phase on April 11 in Kairana. This time Tabassum Hasan, the sitting MP, will represent SP while BJP has fielded Pradeep Kumar. Harendra Singh Malik is Congress' candidate for the Lok Sabha Election 2019.
