In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Adityanath was elected in UP on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket. He won the Gorakhpur seat in Uttar Pradesh with 5,39 ,127 votes by a margin of 3,12,783 votes defeating Rajmati Nishad of the SP, who received 2,26,344 votes.
After Yogi Adityanath vacated the Gorakhpur seat upon becoming the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, bye elections were held in Gorakhpur in 2018. In the bye elections, Praveen Kumar Nishad, a joint candidate for Samajwadi Party and Nishad Party, was elected to the Parliament. Praveen Kumar Nishad joined BJP this year.
In 2009, BJP candidate Adityanath won the elections with 4,03,156 votes defeating BSP's candidate Vinay Shankar Tiwari who received 1,82,885 votes. The overall margin between the two candidates was 2,20,271 votes.
There are five assembly seats under the Gorakhpur constituency which includes Caimpiyarganj, Pipraich, Gorakhpur Urban, Gorakhpur Rural and Sahjanwa. While this Lok Sabha seat is not reserved for scheduled caste category.
There are total ten candidates out of which there are no independent candidates. Dr. Ashish Kumar Singh from CPI, Madhusudan Tripathi from INC, Ravindra Shyamnarayan Shukla Urf Ravi Kishan from BJP and Rambhual Nishad from SP are among the key candidates.
In 2019, voting was conducted in the seventh phase on May 19 in Gorakhpur constituency of Uttar Pradesh. The Lok Sabha 2019 results will be announced on May 23.
