In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Harish Chandra of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was elected from the Basti constituency in Uttar Pradesh. He won with 3,57,680 votes defeating Brij Kishor Singh (Dimpal) of the Samajwadi Party by a margin of 33,562 votes.
In the 2009 elections, Arvind Kumar Chaudhary of the BSP was elected with 2,68,666 votes (34.72 per cent of the total votes polled in the constituency). His closest opponent was Raj Kishor Singh of the Samajwadi Party, who received 1,63,456 votes (21.12 per cent).
There are five assembly seats under the Basti constituency: Harraiya, Kaptanganj, Rudhauli, Basti Sadar and Mahadewa.
Voting for the Basti constituency was conducted in the sixth phase of General Election 2019 on May 12.
For the 2019 parliamentary elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party has fielded Harish Chandra. Raj Kishor Singh is contesting on an Indian National Congress (INC) ticket for the Basti constituency. The Bahujan Samaj Party has fielded Ram Prasad Chaudhary.
