Dominated by Jat population, Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh is considered to be an important Lok Sabha seat. The district of Baghpat has a population of over 13,00,000 as per 2011 census data. In 2014 national election, BJP's Satyapal Singh was elected to parliament in the constituency. He received 4,23,475 votes. His closest opponent was Ghulam Mohammad from the Samajwadi Party, who received 2,13,609 votes. Ajit Singh from the Rashtriya Lok Dal or RLD was third in the electoral contest.
In 1989 and 1991, Ajit Singh from Janta Dal had been elected from the constituency. In 1996, he again won the national election from Baghpat. He, however, lost in 1998. He went on to win from the constituency in 1998 (bypolls), 1999, 2004 and 2009.
The sitting parliamentarian from Baghpat, BJP's Satyapal Singh currently holds the Minister of State portfolio in the Ministry of Human Resources Development. He served as an IPS officer and was also the police commissioner of Mumbai before retiring.
There are five assembly seats under the Baghpat parliamentary constituency - Chhaprauli, Baraut, Siwalkhaas, Modinagar, and Baghpat.
The Lok Sabha Election 2019 in Baghpat were conducted in the first phase on April 11. RLD's Jayant Chaudhary took on the BJP candidate.
