In the 2019 General Election all eyes will be on the Azamgarh seat in Uttar Pradesh which was held by Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav in the 16th Lok Sabha election. In the 2014 General Election, Mulayam Singh Yadav received 3,40,306 votes and defeated BJP’s Ramakant Yadav with a margin of just 63,204 votes.
In 20019 election, Ramakant Yadav had won from the Azamgarh seat with 2,47,648 votes. His closest opponent was BSP’s Akbar Ahmad Dumpy who received 1,98,609 votes.
In 1971 election, Congress candidate Chandrajeet was elected from Azamgarh. In 1977 election, BLD candidate Ram Naresh was elected.
In 1980, Chandrajeet was elected on a ticket from JNP (S). In 1984, Santosh Kumar Singh, Congress candidates, was elected from Azamgarh. In 1989, Ram Kishana from BSP was elected.
In 1991 General Election, Chandrajeet was elected again but on a ticket from Janata Dal. In 1996, Rama Kant Yadav from Samajwadi Party was elected. In 1998, Akbar Ahmad Dampy from BSP was elected from Azamgarh seat.
In 1999, Rama Kant Yadav from Samajwadi Party was elected from Azamgarh. In 2004, Rama Kant Yadav was elected again but on a ticket from BSP.
The 2019 General Election for Azamgarh seat was held in the sixth phase. This time Samajwadi Party fielded Akhilesh Yadav, former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and current Samajwadi Party president. BJP, on the other hand, fielded Dinesh Lal Yadav Nirahua, a Bhojpuri actor, singer turned politician.
Akhilesh Yadav was first elected to parliament from Kannauj in 2000 by elections. He was then elected again in 2004, and 2009 election, from Kannauj.
There are five assembly segments under the Azamgarh Lok Sabha seat. These include Gopalpur, Sagri, Mubarakpur, Azamgarh, and Mehnagar.
