In the 2014 general election, all eyes were set on Amethi with BJP fielding Smriti Irani against the then Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi won from Amethi with a margin of 1,07,903 votes. He received 4,08,651 votes while Smriti Irani garnered 3,00,748 votes. This was Rahul Gandhi's third term in Lok Sabha.
In 2009, Rahul Gandhi defeated his closest opponent, BSP's Asheesh Shukla with a margin of 3,70,198 votes. Rahul Gandhi had received 4,64,195 votes against Mr Shukla's 93,997 votes.
Amethi seat has, for the most part, been a Congress stronghold. In the 1971 general election, Vidya Dhar Bajpai was elected from this seat. In 1977, the seat went to Ravindra Pratap Singh from BLD.
In the 1980 general election, Sanjay Gandhi, Indira Gandhi's son, was elected from Amethi. In 1984, her other son, Rajiv Gandhi won the Amethi constituency. Rajiv Gandhi was elected again in 1989 and 1991.
In 1996 Congress fielded Satish Sharma who defeated BJP's Raja Mohan Singh. In 1998, Sanjay Singh was elected on a ticket from BJP.
In 1999, Sonia Gandhi contested and won the Amethi seat. Since 2004, the seat has been won by Rahul Gandhi, now Congress president.
For the 2019 Lok Sabha election, the contest is again between Congress chief Rahul Gandhi and BJP leader Smriti Irani. Smriti Irani has served as the Minister of Human Resource Development, and as the Minister of Information and Broadcasting in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Cabinet.
There are five assembly segments under the Amethi Lok Sabha constituency. These include Tiloi, Salon, Jagdishpur, Gauriganj, and Amethi.
