In the 2014 General Elections, BJP candidate Satish Kumar was elected from the Aligarh seat in Uttar Pradesh. He received 5,14,622 votes. His closest opponent was Dr. Arvind Kumar Singh from BSP who received 2,27,886 votes. The voter turnout in 2014 was 59.38%.
In the general Elections of 2009, the contest was between BSP and SP candidates. The winner from Aligarh seat was BSP's Raj Kumari Chauhan while the SP candidate Zafar Alam remained at the second spot with 1,76,887 votes. The voter turnout in 2009 was 51.48%.
No single political party has been able to create a stronghold in Aligarh, although BJP's candidate was elected to parliament from Aligarh in 1991, 1996, 1998, and 1999 General Elections. In 1991, 1996, 1998 and 1999 Sheela Gautam was elected. In 2004, her winning spell was challenged by Bijendra Gautam from Congress.
For the General Election 2019, BSP has fielded Dr. Ajeet Baliyan, Bijendra Singh Chaudhary is Congress candidate and the sitting MP Satish Kumar Gautam will represent BJP. Satish Kumar Gautam was also the member of the Standing Committee on Chemicals and Fertilizers and was also a member of the Consultative Committee, Ministry of Railways.
There are five assembly segments under the Aligarh parliamentary constituency. These include Barauli, Khair, Atrauli, Aligarh and Kol.
