The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) holds 131 seats in the outgoing Bihar assembly - Bharatiya Janata Party 80, Janata Dal (United) 45, Hindustani Awam Morcha (S) 4, and two independents. The Opposition has 111 seats - Rashtriya Janata Dal 77, Congress 19, CPI(ML) 11, CPI(M) 2, and CPI 2.
Votes cast by over 7 crore electors will decide the fates of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the opposition Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance). Political strategist Prashant Kishore's Jan Suraaj party is the dark horse that, many believe, could cause a dent in the opposition coalition's votes.
Voting for the Bihar Assembly election 2025 was held on November 6 and 11. The results will be declared today, November 14. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's governance record and the opposition's swipes on issues ranging from development to law and order have remained a mainstay during campaigning.
The 2020 assembly polls in Bihar were held in the shadow of the Covid pandemic; the incumbent NDA retained power, forming the government with Nitish Kumar as Chief Minister. In 2022, Nitish Kumar cut ties with the NDA and formed the government with the RJD-led 'Mahagathbandhan'. In 2024, Kumar made another switch, breaking up with the 'Mahagathbandhan' and returning to his alliance with the NDA.
