The Bihar Assembly election 2025 was held in two phases on November 6 and November 11.

The votes will decide how the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the opposition Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) fared. While Chief Minister Nitish Kumar led the NDA's campaign, the Mahagathbandhan's chief ministerial face is Tejashwi Yadav. Political strategist Prashant Kishor's Jan Suraaj party is the third dimension in this election. Junior NDA ally Chirag Paswan's LJP (Ram Vilas) brings a critical layer of alliance dynamics and kingmaker potential by securing a significant number of seats within the alliance.

The Nitish Kumar-led ruling alliance's governance record and the opposition's swipes on issues ranging from the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists to development and law and order have dominated the campaign.

The NDA currently holds 131 seats in the 243-member state assembly - Bharatiya Janata Party 80, Janata Dal (United) 45, Hindustani Awam Morcha (S) 4, and two independents. The Opposition has 111 seats - Rashtriya Janata Dal 77, Congress 19, CPI(ML) 11, CPI(M) 2, and CPI 2.

The 2020 assembly polls in Bihar were held in the shadow of the Covid-19 pandemic. The incumbent NDA retained power, forming the government with Nitish Kumar as Chief Minister. In 2022, Nitish Kumar broke ties with the NDA and reunited with the RJD to form a new government. In 2024, Kumar made another switch, breaking up with the 'Mahagathbandhan' and returning to his alliance with the NDA.
