Delhi rape case: Exemplary action against cops found lax, says Police Commissioner

Delhi rape case: Exemplary action against cops found lax, says Police Commissioner
New Delhi: Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar today said that the ACP who was caught on camera slapping a girl will be subject to a departmental inquiry.

Here are the highlights of his press conference:

  • One major thing that was caught on camera was slapping of a girl by ACP, I lost no time in suspending the officer. He will be subject to a departmental inquiry.
  • Prima facie there was a shortfall in response of officers in Gandhinagar police station.
  • One of the main allegations was that the father was offered bribe. We have not been able to identify them, we have now proposed to take the police officers to the hospital so that the father can identify them.
  • We will take exemplary action against errant police officers.
  • Retorts on being asked whether he'll resign - does your editor resign if you misreport? If my resigning will prevent such actions then I will resign a 1000 times.
  • Problem is one of mental depravity, that won't be solved by anyone resigning, least of all a police chief.
  • Out of the case reported, 85 per cent of rape cases, 86 per cent of molestation and 95 per cent of eve-teasing cases are cracked. This shows the response of the police.
  • Is it humanly possible for a policeman to stop a case like this? A neighbour lures and rapes a girl.
  • Rapes are opportunistic crimes committed within the confines of private spaces.
  • Only three per cent are committed by strangers.
