New Delhi: A scuffle between students in a Delhi school took a tragic turn when a 14-year-old boy died after hitting his head against a wall, the police said.

Prince, a student at a school in Karawal Nagar, allegedly got into a fight with his classmates after they teased him repeatedly, calling him "chubby", Deputy Commissioner of Police AK Singla told the Press Trust of India. According to him, Prince was taken to a private nursing home and later to a government hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

The police have apprehended the juvenile who allegedly pushed the victim, leading to his death.

"In the fight, the juvenile pushed Prince whose head hit the wall and he fell unconscious," DCP Singla said.

He added that the police have registered a case and started investigations.

Prince's family claim that four of Prince's classmates beat him up, but the police believe that only one other student was involved in the scuffle. No external injuries were found on the victim's body, they said.

At around 10:30 am on Thursday, Prince's family was informed that he was unwell and having fits, according to his sister Kanchan.

She said that two students of the school came to their mother to inform her that he was not well. Upon reaching the school, she was allegedly told that he had been taken to a nursing home and will be back soon.

According to Kanchan, when Prince's mother reached the nursing home, no one from the school was present and Prince was lying in a closed room.

When she managed to open the door, she found that he had already died.

Prince's brother, who studies in the same school as him, had heard Prince's cries while being beaten, according to Kanchan. But when he tried to inform his teacher and asked to check on him, he was denied permission, she said.

Prince had allegedly had fights with his classmates once last month and once a day before his death. "The four boys asked Prince to come and play with them as they had finished their classwork. But he refused to go saying that he needed to finish his work," the sister said. "They called my brother extremely studious and told him that they would teach him a lesson. He had told us about the incident, but we thought that it was between friends," she said.

Kanchan said her family was scared of sending Prince's brother back to school, fearing for his safety. She said that there are no cameras installed in the school and teachers are not present to control the students.

The police said that the matter is being probed and school authorities will be questioned.
