Tata Motors Passenger Vehicle has outlined plans for several upcoming launches. Among the new products, the brand aims to roll out petrol variants of the Harrier and Safari SUVs, which have been highly anticipated for quite some time. Until now, both models have been available in the country only with diesel engines, offering both manual and automatic transmissions.
The Tata Safari and Harrier are expected to feature a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine, called the 'Hyperion' by the brand, which was first unveiled at the Auto Expo 2023. This engine is likely to be coupled with either a dual-clutch or a torque converter automatic transmission. It is anticipated to deliver a power output of 170 hp and 280 Nm of torque. More information will be provided when this power unit makes its debut alongside the Tata Sierra on November 25.

Additionally, the launch of a turbo petrol engine could enhance the competitiveness of these models against their rivals, as most competitors in the segment offer petrol units along with diesel options. Moreover, this development may lead to a reduction in the pricing of both SUVs.
Currently, the 2.0-litre diesel engine in the Harrier and Safari generates 167 hp and 350 Nm of peak torque. This engine comes with either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic transmission. At present, the starting price of the Safari is Rs 14.66 lakh (ex-showroom), while the Harrier begins at Rs 14 lakh (ex-showroom).
