Nissan Revives Terrano Name With Plug-In Hybrid Engine, Off-Road Aesthetics

Nissan has brought back the Terrano badge in a bold new avatar, blending rugged off-road prowess with plug-in hybrid technology. Unveiled at Auto China 2026 in Beijing, the Terrano PHEV Concept signals the Japanese automaker's aggressive push into electrified SUVs, particularly for the massive Chinese market.

This revival taps into nostalgia while eyeing future demands. The original Terrano, sold in India from 2013 to 2020 as a Renault Duster based midsize SUV, carved a niche among budget conscious buyers seeking versatility. Now, Nissan reimagines it as a boxy, body-on-frame SUV designed for adventure seekers who also navigate urban jungles.

The concept stands out with its muscular, squared-off stance that screams capability. Up front, rectangular segmented LED headlights frame spaced-out "Nissan" lettering, a chunky bumper, and fender-mounted auxiliary lights, topped by a functional bonnet scoop. The side profile boasts a massive roof rack with integrated driving lamps and a ladder, generous black cladding over wide arches, and aggressive all-terrain tires, perfect for tackling rough trails.

At the rear, the concept SUV gets a full-size spare wheel mounted on the tailgate, secured by a thick horizontal bar connecting slim LED taillamps, plus a beefy bumper for low-speed off-road maneuvers. Clean lines and wide glass areas enhance visibility, making it feel approachable yet intimidating.

While Nissan hasn't disclosed exact specs, speculations are that the Terrano PHEV draws from the Frontier Pro PHEV pickup's setup, a turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with an electric motor, delivering around 400 horsepower and 800 Nm of torque from a 33 kWh battery. This promises over 130 km of electric-only range (CLTC cycle), ideal for city commutes before switching to hybrid off-road mode with intelligent AWD.
