Bal Thackeray attacks Sachin's India
NDTV Correspondent, Monday November 16, 2009, Mumbai

Has the Shiv Sena's ageing tiger bitten off more than he can chew? In an article in the Shiv Sena mouthpiece, party chief Bal Thackeray has hit out at Sachin Tendulkar on comments made to the media last week.

"Mumbai belongs to India. That is how I look at it. I am a Maharashtrian and I am extremely proud of that. But, I am an Indian first," Sachin had said. Forum: Do you agree with Sachin's sentiment?

It's this comment by Maharashtra's own mulga Sachin Tendulkar that angered Bal Thackeray.

In the editorial published in Saamna, Thackeray targeted Tendulkar saying: "You said you are proud of being Marathi but are an Indian first. This has hurt the Marathi people. From the cricket pitch you have entered the political pitch. You also said that all Indians have an equal right on Mumbai. What was the need for this? You have become "run-out" on the Marathi pitch. People praise you when you hit fours and sixes. But if you speak against the rights of Marathi people, they will not tolerate it." Read: Shiv Sena to Sachin: Play cricket, not politics

Perhaps sensing that the comments may not have gone down well, on camera the Sena's comments were quite tame.

"Sachin was born in Mumbai, his father fought many times for Marathi. But, this is a separate issue. Shiv sena has right to speak on Marathi and Maharashtrians. Balasaheb has only given him advice as he loves Sachin," said Shiv Sena spokesperson Sanjay Raut.

The reaction, both political and outside, have been swift and critical. And it is a clear indication that the Shiv Sena chief has underestimated Sachin's popularity.

"I agree with Sachin's comment. He spoke from the bottom of his heart and it is true. The Shiv Sena is using it to play political games," said Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan. Read: Sachin spoke from his heart: Ashok Chavan

"Maharashtrians will feel hurt that Saamna has targeted Sachin. He is a genuine hero. I am a Maharashtrian and I am proud of him," said Anil Dharkar, a columnist.

"This is extremely dangerous and childish: to start making this Mumbai, Maharashtra, India issue. Where is the controversy? Why make one when none exists? Does he want Maharashtra to secede from India?" said veteran journalist Bachi Karkaria.

Raj Thackeray had targeted Amitabh Bachchan and now his uncle Bal Thackeray is targeting Sachin Tendulkar. As both parties fight over the Marathi vote, targeting an icon seems to be the easiest way to catch the public eye.

This man and his other members making fool not only of Maharashtra but ours too. The farmers are committing suicide there but these karta-dharta (as they call themselves)of the marathi-manoos are nowhere to help them. They can create nuisance over things that doesn't matters but can't work for the local people. He and his others family members should be exiled for there acts, otherwise if they continue to create these things someday somebody would definitely do wrong to them and they will not get any time o regret for these doings. He must understand his age factor. It is the time to let people of Maharashtra to think of there own, not under the influence of the person whose own cousin is not in his control. These days there agenda is to make every body from Maharashtra to speak in marathi. Tomorrow they gonna say BSE,NSE is in Maharashtra - all the work should be done in marathi, only those business , companies , investors will be allowed who can speak marathi.Bollywood is in Maharashtra - all the movies and others related things should be in marathi. Now we gonna have our own national anthem and song in marathi. And the day will come when they gonna say India should be to Maharashtra.

i dont recomment but it seems that discussions are going in "first indian after maharashtrian" which is also agreed by thakre as he says "jay hind(then) jay maharashtr" learn marathi read saamna and find that he has no objection for sachin's remarks on indian first. It is balasaheb who made fun of aamir khaan followers when song "aati kya khandala came up" he said in his cartoon, XXX(curse) yetos kay kaargilla?(will you come to kargil?). Please dont teach balasaheb about nationalism as his voting rights were removed for appealing to unite over identity of hindu to defeat pseudo secular minority appeasement politics of congress(at that time). Balasaheb Thakre remained sole leader in mumbai to return attacks from fanatics in 1992 dec and 93 jan when state and center govnt did not provide security cover for "aam aadmi" of mumbai. A mosque in UP is demolished and mumbai got 12 serial bombblasts as punishment. It was balasaheb who stood to anti nationals like abu aazmi who was arrested by state CID(congress rule mind it) in TADA for alleged link up with dawood and tiger menon. Why no one asks Baichung bhutia whose aasam is it? as there are deadlier racial attacks on biharis ina assam. The question whose mumbai is it, itself wrongly motivated leading to controvarsies for this state. it is time non marathi accept maharashtr as their state and work for its prosperity. Examples exist in mumbai itself on hutatma chauk. the listed 105 who include jews, parsee, gujju and angloindians; they loved this land of shivaji. The north indians need to learn indian languages first, if migration (out of UP)is un avoidable in their normal life. They need to make their celebrations inclusive as Navratri, Ganesh chaturthi, mount mary jatra, haji aali are. How many non bihari are invited for CHChat celebrations by Mitr bihar in mumbai? how many south indians are invited for raamleela?
