Mumbai Police asks for stiffer fine for drunk driving
NDTV Correspondent, Monday February 1, 2010, Mumbai

The Mumbai Police is meeting state government officials on Monday to ask if drunk drivers be fined Rs 10,000 instead of the current Rs 2000.

On Friday night, the city witnessed one of its worst cases of drunk driving when a woman driver ran her SUV into a police check post on Marine Drive.  A policeman and a biker were killed. Four other cops were injured.

The woman, Nooriya Haveliwala, has been arrested. She is a beautician who lives in Chembur.

The Mumbai Police is waiting for the results of her medical tests to determine if she was on drugs when the accident took place.

So far Mumbai Police could not feel the impact of accidents, as only common people died. Now with one of their own men died and many injured, they got the impact. But the government may not be in hurry to hike the fine as they are yet to get the impact.
