The resignation appeared to have little effect on the unrest as thousands of protesters remained on the streets late in the day. They blocked roads and vandalised government facilities, while the army helicopters ferried some ministers to safe places.
A day earlier, demonstrations led by young people gripped the capital, and police opened fire on the crowds, killing 19 people. Amid the ongoing unrest in Nepal, the Uttar Pradesh government has directed the police administration to remain on high alert in the border districts of the state at all times. The state government has also issued helpline numbers to help the stranded Indian citizens.
Acting on the instructions of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Director General of Police (DGP) Rajiv Krishan has ordered the police to remain on high alert 24 hours a day.
To further strengthen the security in the border districts of Uttar Pradesh, an additional police force has been deployed. Patrolling and surveillance have been intensified to ensure a swift response in case of emergencies.

"We were going to Pashupatinath Temple in Nepal, from Bhopal (MP). We had boarded the flight, but it was cancelled. So, we deplaned. The situation is tense there. We are not being allowed to cross. The airport is closed. So, we have come back. We were a group of 60 people - all senior citizens. We are returning from the airport," Saxena told news agency ANI.
Another tourist, Ashok, said that the flight was cancelled and they had to stay in a lodge overnight.

Chief of the Nepali Army, General Ashok Raj Sigdel, urged Gen Z protestors to pursue a peaceful resolution through dialogue as Army troops are deployed to maintain order. In a recorded video statement released late on Tuesday, the Army chief said, "During the protest, extensive damage has been incurred. To prevent further loss of properties and to maintain peace, security, and harmony, national unity and harmony are our common duty."
General Sigdel, in his addresses, started by expressing deep sorrow over damage to public property during the nationwide protests and extended condolences to families of those who lost their lives, while wishing a speedy recovery for the injured.
"Easing the incumbent uncomfortable situation, the national heritages, public as well as private properties, common citizens, diplomatic missions and give the sense of security to the public and protect paramount interest is our common duty. Thus, in order to take the country out of this odd situation through peaceful measures, I would request the protesting group to cancel the plans of protest and call for the talks," said Sigdel.

Russia Urges Peaceful Resolution Of Nepal’s Crisis
Russia on Tuesday expressed concern over the developments in Nepal and urged a peaceful resolution of the crisis while advising its citizens to refrain from travelling to the Himalayan nation.
"The Russian side urges a peaceful resolution of the internal political crisis within the framework of the national laws and hopes for a speedy normalisation of the situation in the friendly country," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Moscow is "closely monitoring the situation which transformed from mass street protests into mass rioting with casualties", it said.
The foreign ministry said according to available information, there are no Russian citizens among the victims. The situation around the Russian Embassy in Kathmandu remains calm, it said.

The army also intervened after a group of agitators tried to vandalise the gate of the holy Pashupatinath Temple.

Last week, the Nepal government blocked access to several social media platforms after the companies missed the deadline to register under new regulations, aimed at cracking down on misuse. It said social media users create fake IDs and use them to spread hate speech and fake news, commit fraud and other crimes on these platforms.
A government notice directed the regulator, Nepal Telecommunications Authority, to deactivate unregistered social media but gave no details of which platforms faced action. The services will be restored once the platforms comply with its order, the government said.

The Nepal government lifted its ban on 26 social media and communication apps, after violent protests left 19 dead and hundreds injured.
Nepal's Minister for Communications and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung urged the country's young protesters to suspend their agitation, which has seen violent clashes with security forces.
He added that relief will be provided to families of those who died during the protests and free treatment will be provided to the injured.
A judicial committee will be formed to investigate the incident, and a report will be submitted within 15 days.

Police responded with water cannons, teargas, and rubber bullets after demonstrators threw tree branches and water bottles and shouted anti-government slogans. Some protesters even managed to enter the Parliament compound, intensifying the situation, according to a report by The Kathmandu Post.

On Thursday, Nepal banned social media sites, including Facebook and Instagram, after they did not register with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology. A notice said social media giants were given a week to register with the government, starting August 28. But none -- Meta (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp), Alphabet (YouTube), X (formerly Twitter), Reddit, and LinkedIn - had submitted applications by the deadline.
The government's directions followed a Supreme Court order last year. The social media giants had been asked to establish a point of contact and name a resident grievance handling officer and compliance officer.
TikTok, Viber, Witk, Nimbuzz, and Popo Live are registered with the government and continue to be in use in Nepal. Applications from Telegram and Global Diary are being examined, it is learnt.
