While checking out of a hotel room, most of us pack those mini toiletries in the washroom and tea and coffee bags. These are complementary items that travellers almost instinctively pick up. But what happens when you pack something (or many things) you're not supposed to take home? A holiday in Bali has turned into an online storm for exactly that reason. Sparking widespread outrage, a now-viral post shows hotel staff confronting a group of Indian tourists at a luxury property in Ubud after discovering missing items during checkout.

According to reports by The Bali Times, the incident took place on April 19, 2026, at Asvara Resort Ubud. Four Indian tourists, who had checked in on April 16 for a short stay, were stopped mid-checkout when staff noticed several items missing from their rooms.

During a routine inspection, hotel staff reportedly found items packed inside the guests' luggage. These included bath and pool towels, kimono robes, a hair dryer, a doormat, a TV remote box, and dining utensils. Yes, even a doormat made the list. The situation quickly escalated as staff halted the checkout process and conducted a search. The missing items were recovered from the tourists' bags.

Despite the seriousness of the situation, the case didn't go down the legal route. Local police confirmed that the matter was resolved through mutual agreement. The tourists returned all the items, and the hotel chose not to press charges. Ultimately, the guests were allowed to check out and leave.

The Internet Is Widely Disappointed

The video began circulating widely on social media, where users reacted strongly to what they saw. The incident struck a nerve, with many calling it "embarrassing" and "damaging to India's image abroad." One user asked what everyone was thinking, "They can afford to travel abroad, but can't buy spoons and towels?" Another wrote, "Feeling so embarrassed watching this."

One user said, "For items worth a few thousand, you lost our pride." Another added, "Such behaviour is exactly why Indian tourists get a bad reputation." Some comments turned sarcastic, with one user joking, "Only towels and a doormat? Why leave the bed and tiles behind?" Others demanded stricter action, suggesting fines or penalties to discourage such incidents in the future.

While this may seem like a one-off incident, it has reignited an ongoing conversation about tourist behaviour abroad.
