Why Is Tadoba Worth Visting

Counted among Maharashtra's oldest National Parks, created in 1955, the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve covers 623 km and is famous for its high density of Bengal tigers. It boasts a thriving ecosystem with a diverse range of flora and fauna, offering the untouched beauty of nature. Located in Chandrapur District, Maharashtra, it includes Tadoba National Park and Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary.

Named after the tribal god Taru (Tadoba) and the Andhari River, with a shrine to Taru near the lake, the wildlife reserve covers Chimur Hills, Moharli and Kolsa ranges. It features dense forests, meadows, valleys and two lakes - Tadoba and Kolsa.

How To Reach Tadoba?

  • By Air: Take a flight to Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport (NAG) in Nagpur, about 140 km from the reserve. From the airport, you can hire a cab or take a bus, which typically takes 2.5 to 3 hours to reach the park gates.
  • By Rail: Reach Chandrapur Railway Station, located about 45 km from the main entry gates. You can also visit the place after a 140 km drive from Nagpur Junction.
  • By Road: Tadoba is well connected via national highways, including NH 44 and NH 353D from Nagpur, the Samruddhi Mahamarg (Expressway) from Mumbai/Pune and NH 44 from Hyderabad. State-run MSRTC and private buses are also available from nearby cities.

Key Tips For Planning A Trip To Tadoba

  • To experience the majesty of one of India's popular national parks, book a trip in advance, especially for weekends and peak season (October to February).
  • The best time to visit the park is from October to June, with winter (October-February) being ideal. Peak summer (April-June) remains a good time for tiger sightings.
  • Core gates of the tiger reserve remain closed on Tuesdays and buffer gates on Wednesdays, with exceptions by zone. Moharli, Kolara and Zari gates are popular entry points.
