All You Need To Know About Kandovan Village

The Persian word Kandovan translates to 'beehive', which suits its terrain, featuring rigorous winding paths leading to the cave houses. The pyramidal cliffs, shaped like hive cells, are known as karan, each having 2-4 stories and rising about 40 metres. The lower level houses cattle, the upper level serves as a living space equipped with a kitchen, the third level is designated for guests or friends, and the topmost segment is used to store food for an entire year.

Kandovan has also bagged a spot on the list of the 54 best tourism villages announced by the World Tourism Organisation. This milestone was achieved after the village successfully met the UN tourism body's strict criteria, including economic sustainability, environmental and social responsibility, cultural resource preservation, and commitment to safety.

The rocky village, often referred to as a more secluded version of Turkey's Cappadocia, tells the story of people who escaped the Mongol invasion. The escapees moved to the slopes of the Sahand Mountains, settling in the region by hand-carving houses into the sides of the mountains.
