Barren Island is an uninhabited island near the meeting point of the Indian and Burmese tectonic plates, approximately 140 kilometres from Port Blair. It covers 8.34 square kilometres and is known for its active stratovolcano, which has erupted multiple times recently, including small-scale eruptions in September.
According to data from the Andaman and Nicobar administration's archives, Barren Island's first eruption occurred in 1787, and moderate eruptions occurred in 1991, 2005, 2017, and 2022. The most recent ones took place this year on September 13 and 20.
Chanchal Yadav, commissioner of shipping and managing director of Andaman and Nicobar Islands Integrated Development Corporation Limited (ANIIDCO), stated that the Directorate of Shipping Services took the initiative to boost tourism in response to the Andaman and Nicobar Administration's directives, as per reports.
Separate excursions will be planned for government school students in order to encourage educational engagement and provide them with a distinctive opportunity to learn about the geological aspects of the location.
