Chennai: A police complaint has been filed against Tamil Nadu opposition leader MK Stalin and 79 other DMK legislators for protesting inside the Tamil Nadu assembly and secretariat complex on Thursday and Friday. They have been accused of defying orders and provoking with intent to cause riot.

On Wednesday, the assembly Speaker had suspended 90 DMK legislators for unruly behaviour after they protested against use of a derogatory word by an AIADMK leader against DMK chief MK Stalin.

The leaders then protested outside the assembly claiming they have a right to use the room meant for the Leader of Opposition, during their period of suspension. Officials had earlier locked MK Stalin's room and shut the entrance too.

On Friday, MK Stalin and other party legislators staged a 'model' assembly in protest inside the assembly complex.

The DMK has slammed the Chennai police's action. Party spokesperson TKS Elangovan says "Police cannot file FIR against DMK MLAs. They protested only in the assembly complex where they are entitled to assemble, not in any public road where they require police permission. We will discuss with our party leader and decide the next course of action. "

The DMK has also moved the Madras High Court challenging the Speaker's ruling. The petition is likely to be heard on Monday.
