Two teenagers injured as teargas shells powder catches fire in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Two teenagers suffered burn injuries when they lit an explosive powder after extracting it from used teargas shells at Tarnaka area adjoining Osmania University in Hyderabad on Sunday.

The teargas canisters were fired upon students by police personnel during a clash on Friday over the Telangana issue.

13-year-old Santosh Reddy and 17-year-old Vinod Reddy extracted the explosive powder (ammonium nitrate) from the shells, apparently while playing, and when they lit the powder, it exploded triggering minor fire, police said.

"They negligently handled the fired/used teargas shells. Nitrate and other explosive material in the shells exploded when it came in contact with fire," Inspector P Ashok of the Osmania University Police Station said.

The boys, who had received burn injuries on their hand and face, had been shifted to a nearby hospital and their condition is out of danger, police said.
