Kerala assembly session to start tomorrow

Thiruvananthapuram: The full-budget session of the Kerala Assembly, beginning on Monday, is expected to be stormy as the house is meeting in the backdrop of the political upheaval caused by the murder of Marxist rebel and RMP leader TP Chandrasekharan.

Though on the defensive, the CPI(M), which leads the opposition LDF, is expected to raise the issue in the house, alleging that the murder of the former party functionary had been turned into a ruse by the government for haunting and harrassing its cadres in north Kerala.

Also, LDF is certain to seize on such burning issues as the hike in petrol price and increase in prices of essential goods to embarrass the ruling Congress-led UDF.

The floor managers of UDF, however, believe any attempt by the opposition to take on the government would only boomerang on CPI(M) as the party has been under a cloud in connection with the Chandrasekharan murder case.

The flare up in the long-running feud between CPI(M) stalwart VS Achuthanandan and party state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan is also expected to provide ammunition to the treasury benches to deflect the opposition attack.

According to UDF leaders, it would be interesting to watch if Mr Achuthanandan, as opposition leader, would support the official position of the CPI(M) in the case since he had declined to back the allegation that investigation in the case was politically biased.

The main agenda before the house is department wise discussion of the proposals made in the budget for 2012-13, presented by Finance Minister KM Mani in March.
